Sadie Benning: Pixelvisions
This survey of Benning's early video works was notable as none of them had ever been screened at the AAFF before this, and as the global pandemic was winding down, the videos felt prescient and even more relatable. All 7 of these confessional shorts were recorded on the Fisher Price PXL2000, a toy camera that saved directly to audio cassettes. At the time of their making (1989-1992), the AAFF did not accept artist videos, only works produced on film.
This 2-page spread shown here from the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival catalog introduces the program Sadie Benning: Pixelvisions. A curatorial essay was commissioned to support this program, and was published in the print catalog as well as the AAFF blog. It is also available on the next page.
